Les candidatures sont sollicitées pour un poste de chercheur postdoctoral à l’Université McGill au Québec, Canada. Le poste sera affilié conjointement à la Chaire de recherche du Canada sur les migrations internationales (Thomas Soehl; membre de l’ÉRIQA) et au laboratoire Demo-Tip (Aaron Erlich). Le/la chercheur(euse) sera également affilié au Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship, un centre de recherche interdisciplinaire et interuniversitaire.
L’engagement initial sera d’une durée d’un an, mais il pourra être renouvelé pour une deuxième année en fonction des performances.
Objectif et responsabilités de fond
Le poste sera réparti entre deux projets de recherche.
Tajribati – Premières trajectoires d’intégration des Syriens au Canada. Ce projet a recueilli la première vague d’une enquête représentative à l’échelle nationale des Syriens réinstallés au Canada entre 2015 et 2017. Au cours des deux prochaines années, le projet créera ses premiers rapports et documents de recherche à partir de ces données, tout en préparant la deuxième vague de collecte de données. Étude sur les Nigérians au pays et à l’étranger: Ce projet de recherche financé par le CRSH utilisera une variété de stratégies de recrutement d’enquête innovantes pour mener une enquête mondiale sur la diaspora nigériane. Les premiers tests préliminaires de la stratégie de terrain sont terminés mais nous prévoyons de lancer plusieurs enquêtes supplémentaires au cours de la période de financement de 2 ans du projet.
Nous attendons du chercheur qu’il joue un rôle actif dans la promotion de ces projets, en collaboration avec des étudiants diplômés et des assistants de recherche de premier cycle. Le chercheur aura également la possibilité de développer sa propre recherche dans le cadre de ces projets. Les tâches comprendront des revues de la littérature, la préparation de la collecte de données et la réalisation d’enquêtes en ligne, la gestion des données, le codage et le nettoyage, l’analyse des données, la rédaction de documents pour publication et la présentation des résultats. Le poste n’implique aucun enseignement et est une excellente occasion pour un chercheur de construire son C.V.
Critère d’éligibilité
Un doctorat2 en sociologie, démographie, science politique, géographie ou autre discipline connexe. La thèse doit être achevée avant la date de début prévue, mais les candidats seront également considérés avec une lettre de leur superviseur principal indiquant que la thèse peut être soumise peu de temps après la date de début prévue.
- Expertise dans le domaine de la migration internationale et un fort intérêt à travailler dans un environnement interdisciplinaire
- Les candidats doivent avoir de solides compétences statistiques et une vaste expérience de travail avec des données quantitatives complexes.
- D’excellentes compétences en logiciel statistique sont requises – les compétences et l’expérience en programmation R sont préférées.
- L’expérience ou le désir d’apprendre à programmer des enquêtes complexes (Qualtrics / Javascript) sont des avantages.
- La connaissance du contrôle de version (Git / Github) et LaTeX est un plus
- Les candidats doivent bien travailler dans un environnement de recherche collaborative. Une excellente capacité à communiquer en anglais, tant à l’oral qu’à l’écrit, est essentielle. La connaissance du français n’est pas requise mais constitue un avantage.
Position
Selon la disponibilité du candidat, le poste peut commencer dès octobre 2020, mais au plus tard à l’hiver / printemps 2021. Le salaire est négociable mais devrait être dans la fourchette des principaux organismes de financement fédéraux canadiens (45 000 à 50 000 $ CA par an, plus avantages). Postdoctoral researcher in international migration – sociology/political science/quantitative methods
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher position at McGill University in Québec, Canada. The position will be jointly affiliated with the Canada Research Chair in International Migration (Thomas Soehl) and Demo-Tip lab (Aaron Erlich). The researcher will also be affiliated with the Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship, an interdisciplinary inter-university research centre.
The initial appointment will be for one year but the appointment may be renewed for a second year based on performance.
Substantive Focus and Responsibilities
The position will be split between two research projects.
Tajribati – Early Integration Trajectories of Syrians in Canada. This project collected the first wave of a nationally representative survey of Syrians who were resettled to Canada between 2015 and 2017. Over the next two years, the project will create its first reports and research papers from this data, while also preparing the second wave of data collection. Study of Nigerians at Home and Abroad: This SSHRC funded research project will use a variety of innovative survey recruitment strategies to conduct a global survey of the Nigerian diaspora. Initial pre-tests of the fieldwork strategy are completed but we plan to launch several additional surveys over the 2-year funding period of the project.
We expect the researcher to take an active role in pushing these projects forward, in collaboration with graduate students and undergraduate research assistants. The researcher will also have opportunities to develop their own research within these projects. Tasks will include literature reviews, preparing data collection and fielding online surveys, data management, coding, and cleaning, data analysis, drafting papers for publication, and presentation of results. The position does not entail any teaching and is a great opportunity for a scholar to build their C.V.
Eligibility Criteria
A Ph.D. in sociology, demography, political science, geography, or another related discipline. The dissertation should be completed before the anticipated start-date but candidates will also be considered with a letter from their primary supervisor stating that the thesis can be submitted shortly after the anticipated start date.
- Expertise in the field of international migration and a strong interest in working in an interdisciplinary environment
- Candidates must have strong statistical skills and extensive experience working with complex quantitative data.
- Excellent skills in statistical software are required – R programming skills and experience are preferred.
- Experience or desire to learn programming complex surveys (Qualtrics/Javascript) are advantages.
- Knowledge of version control (Git/Github) and LaTeX are both pluses
- Candidates must work well in a collaborative research environment. Excellent ability to communicate in English, both spoken and written, is essential. Knowledge of French is not required but is an advantage.
Position
Depending on the candidate’s availability the position may begin as early as October 2020, but no later than Winter/Spring, 2021. Salary is negotiable but expected to be in the range of major federal Canadian funding agencies (CA$45,000‐50,000 per year, plus benefits).
