New course: CITIES AND MIGRATION: SANCTUARY, INTEGRATION, IMPLEMENTATION, AND INTERNATIONAL GOVERNANCE

3-credit course

Combined graduate-undergraduate, Winter 2023

Organized in collaboration with Sciences Po and the New School (NYC), this transnational course will introduce students to contemporary and emerging developments in the ways local governments intervene on issues associated with immigration. In dialogue with case studies and comparative research, students will learn about how cities in different regions of the world design and deliver services to distinct groups of migrants and how immigration has become a central issue of local policymaking in small and large localities. The course will also provide students with knowledge on the ways in which cities have mobilized nationally and internationally for a place in migration governance infrastructures, their role in immigration policy diffusion and on the different types of relations local actors create with civil society actors in this policy sector.

This course is taught by three experts on the topic: Thomas Lacroix (Sciences Po Paris), Colleen Thouez (The New School) and Mireille Paquet (Concordia University). Participating students will be based in France, the United States and Canada. As such, the course will be a unique opportunity to develop a comparative appreciation of the challenges associated with local immigration policymaking in different regions of the world, while also developing transnational professional networks. The course will also feature guest speakers who have recognized expertise in local and international policymaking, researchers and civil society actors who can share lessons learned from on-the-ground experiences.
