L’ÉRIQA a le plaisir de vous inviter à la projection du documentaire “When the water horse seeks a new home” (2026, Indonésie) en présence de la responsable académique Antje Missbach, professeure de sociologie à l’Université de Bielefeld. La projection, organisée par notre membre Luna Vives, professeure de géographie à l’Université de Montréal, aura lieu le mardi 22 septembre au campus MIL.

Réalisé par Andrianus Merdhi, le film suit le parcours d’une petite figurine en plastique représentant un animal, retrouvée sur un bateau de réfugiés rohingyas abandonné, échoué sur une plage d’Aceh, en Indonésie, à près de deux mille kilomètres du point de départ de leur périple.

La projection, d’une durée de 25min en anglais, sera suivie d’une période de discussion avec Antje Missbach autour des expériences des personnes migrantes dans le documentaire et de l’expérience de tournage, notamment en rapport avec les questions éthiques et logistiques.

ERIQA is pleased to invite you to a screening of the documentary “When the water horse seeks a new home” (2026, Indonesia) with academic lead Antje Missbach, professor of sociology at Bielefeld University. The screening, organized by our member Luna Vives, will take place on Tuesday 22th September at the MIL campus.

The documentary, by award-winning Indonesian filmmaker Andrianus Merdhi, follows a small plastic animal figurine found on an abandoned Rohingya refugee boat washed ashore on a beach in Aceh, Indonesia, nearly two thousand kilometres from where the journey began. Through this object, the film traces the human story of displacement, loss, and resilience behind Rohingya maritime crossings of the Andaman Sea. It uses Acehnese and Rohingya lay actors to imaginatively reconstruct pivotal experiences before and after their arrival, creating a space between testimony and creative storytelling.

The screening, 25min in english, will be followed by a discussion with Antje Missbach about the experiences of migrants depicted in the documentary and the filmmaking process, particularly in relation to ethical and logistical issues.
