DESCRIPTION:L’ÉRIQA et l’Institut de recherche sur les migrations et la société (IRMS) organisent une conférence avec Nora Fabritius\, doctorante en sociologie au Centre de recherche sur les relations ethniques et le nationalisme (CEREN) de l’Université d’Helsinki\, le 18 novembre à 12h à l’Université Concordia. La conférence se tiendra en anglais. \nVeuillez vous inscrire en remplissant ce formulaire. \nRésumé \nDans cette présentation\, Nora Fabritius explore les pratiques et les discours entourant le profilage des voyageurs dans le contexte du contrôle des frontières finlandaises. Plus précisément\, elle examine comment les gardes-frontières travaillant en première ligne aux contrôles frontaliers à la frontière extérieure de l’espace Schengen en Finlande définissent\, gèrent et négocient les limites juridiques et morales du profilage. En s’appuyant sur les conclusions de sa thèse de doctorat\, elle illustre comment les idéaux et les rôles professionnels clés au sein des gardes-frontières finlandais interfèrent et façonnent la manière dont les questions sensibles\, telles que le profilage ethnique\, sont abordées\, tant au sein de l’institution que dans la communication avec le grand public. Les comptes rendus publics sont souvent formulés en termes strictement juridiques\, ce qui limite la compréhension des dimensions humaines complexes et ambiguës du profilage dans le travail quotidien. You’ll explore how they navigate the legal and moral complexities of traveller profiling — including the often-unspoken dynamics of ethnic profiling. Through this lens\, the talk reveals how official narratives\, shaped by legal frameworks\, can obscure the more ambiguous human aspects of border control. You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of how profiling operates in practice\, its implications for discrimination\, and why these insights matter for ongoing debates about legislation and public accountability. \nNora Fabritius is a doctoral researcher in sociology at the Centre for Research on Ethnic Relations and Nationalism (CEREN) at the University of Helsinki. Her research employs ethnographic methods to examine decision-making practices\, professional ideals\, and narratives of security and law within the Finnish Border Guard. She has previously worked as a project planner at the Centre of Excellence in Law\, Identity and the European Narratives (Eurostorie) at the University of Helsinki\, focusing on topics related to Indigenous\, cultural\, and linguistic rights in northern Finland and Norway. \nRegistration and more information on the event website.
